Nostrand Ave SBS Project
The NYC Dept of Design & Construction (DDC) has completed the Nostrand Avenue Select Bus Service Phase II Project/ HWK1130A along Nostrand Avenue between Emmons Avenue and Taylor Street and Rogers/Bedford Avenues between Emmons Avenue and Taylor Street. For details of this project, continue reading below.
Between Monday, September 8, 2014, and lasting approximately 4 days, restrictions to curbside parking and driveway access will be in effect on Nostrand Avenue between Flatbush Avenue and Avenue H. These effects are associated with installation of a bus pad being performed by the NYC Department of Design and Construction for the Project HWK1130A. Beginning on/about Friday, September 12, 2014, and lasting approximately 2 weeks, restrictions to curbside parking and driveway access will be in effect on Nostrand Avenue between Flatbush Avenue and Avenue H. These effects are associated with the repair of a Transit Authority Discharge Pipe being performed by the NYC Department of Design and Construction for the Project HWK1130A.
Project Overview: The NYC Dept. of Design and Construction is currently managing the Nostrand Avenue Select Bus Service Phase II Project/ HWK1130A along Nostrand Avenue between Emmons Avenue and Taylor Street and Rogers/Bedford Avenues between Emmons Avenue and Taylor Street. While this project encompasses both street level improvements and sub-surface work, such as replacement of existing infrastructure (water mains, combined sewers, catch basins, street-lighting and traffic signals), a significant aspect of this project will be the installation of a full-time bus lane added through-out the project limits. Upon completion, bus riders will be provided with a faster and more efficient service than that on local or limited bus stop buses. Among the various improvements associated with this measure, the SBS buses have dedicated bus lanes and transit signal priority, allowing “traffic signals to extend the green light or shorten the red light to keep buses moving.” For more information, visit the MTA-SBS Website by clicking the link.
Details of Completed Work: The NYC Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) has completed its major work operations for the Nostrand Avenue Select Bus Service Project between Emmons Avenue and Taylor Street and Rogers/ Bedford Avenues between Emmons Avenue and Taylor Street. On that note, the DDC would like to thank the community for being patient while we improved the infrastructure and beautified the streetscape. The intent of the project is to provide bus riders a faster and more efficient service than that on local or limited bus stop services. Among the various improvements associated with this measure, the SBS buses have dedicated bus lanes and transit signal priority, allowing “traffic signals to extend the green light or shorten the red light to keep buses moving.” Riders can pay their bus fares at dedicated SBS stations prior to boarding the bus, allowing for faster boarding and un-boarding of the bus; in addition, many stations are built with high curbs for easier boarding. To help facilitate the flow of pedestrians and riders, wider sidewalks have been installed at SBS stations with space for trees, seating and wider waiting/standing areas for pedestrians and riders waiting for the bus. The final steps of this project included the planting of trees and punch list items.
Changes to Completed Work: The MTA announced that, based on public response, some changes have been made to the B44 SBS line including:
- The addition of an SBS stop at Avenue L and Nostrand Avenue in both directions, and SBS stops at Gates Avenue on Nostrand Avenue and Bedford Avenue. This requires lengthening the existing local stops and installing fare machinery and other street furniture. These stops will be operational as of early Spring 2014.
- The addition of local bus service along the entire B44 route – effective February 2014.
- The modification of the B44 SBS schedule so that customers will be able to travel the entire route from Sheepshead Bay to Williamsburg Bridge Plaza without having to transfer over most of the day – effective Early April 2014.
