Cortelyou Road & Coney Island Avenue Intersection Safety Improvements

Managing Agency: Department of Transportation (DOT)
Location: Cortelyou Road & Coney Island Avenue intersection
Project Description: Safety and mobility improvements
Expected Date of Installation: September 2018

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), in cooperation with the citywide Vision Zero initiative, will be redesigning the intersection at Cortelyou Road and Coney Island Avenue to improve safety and mobility overall by enhancing pedestrian safety features, improving pedestrian access, calming traffic and clarifying vehicular movements. The implementation of the redesigned intersection will begin in September 2018.

Safety and mobility improvements will include:
• Installation of a new high-visibility crosswalk across Coney Island Ave., creating a third pedestrian crossing at the intersection.
• Installation of a new concrete pedestrian island for new crossing.
• Upgrade and build new pedestrian ramps at the intersection.
• Provide Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) for pedestrians crossing Cortelyou Rd. north to south.
• Add flashing yellow arrow turning signals for vehicles making northbound and southbound left turns.
