Open Enrollment Period for Affordable Health Care

Posted on:

The annual open enrollment period for Affordable Health Care Coverage is November 1, 2015 – January 31, 2016. Visit NY State of Health: The Official Health Plan Marketplace  or call the NYS Healthcare Hotline at 855.355.5777 or 800.662.1220, M-F 8AM-8PM, Saturday 9AM-1PM.

The Federal Affordable Care Act requires that everybody obtain health insurance.

If families have questions about health insurance enrollment, please view Coverage at a Glance to explore coverage options and to apply for insurance online using the NY State of Health website. Students and their families who do not qualify for Medicaid or Child Health Plus may enroll online in private health insurance during the next open enrollment period, which will open on November 15 and close on January 31. Families may also have an opportunity to enroll in private health insurance outside of this time period if they have had a qualifying event, such as job loss, birth of a child, etc. Please note that students and their families who qualify for Medicaid and/or Child Health Plus can enroll online in these programs all year long; however, they should do so as soon as possible to avoid paying a penalty.

Important dates for 2016 enrollment

If you don’t enroll in a 2016 health insurance plan by January 31, 2016, you can’t enroll in a health insurance plan for 2016 unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Visit NY State of Health’s NEW events map at  to find out about health and insurance related events in your community.

Individuals, families and American Indians/Alaskan Natives can use the Marketplace to enroll in Medicaid and, Child Health Plus any time during the year. The Marketplace also offers tax credits for eligible small businesses with 50 or fewer employees.
