Brooklyn Community Board 14 is pleased to announce that Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch has approved additional Sanitation collection services in portions of the district to assist residents in preparation for Passover observances, which commence at sundown on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. The plan provides for additional collection services.

REFUSE:
– For areas with regular collection on Wednesday/Saturday, there will be an extra pick up on Tuesday, April 4.
– For areas with regular collection on Monday/Thursday and Tuesday/Friday, there will be an extra pick up on Wednesday, April 5.
Electronic Recycling and Shredding Event at the Flatbush Food Co-op – March 12, 2023
The Flatbush Food Co-op will be hosting an electronics recycling and shredding event on Sunday, March 12.
Accepting working and non-working:
– Computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, peripherals, cables,
– TVs (all types and sizes), VCR & DVD players, audio/visual equipment,
– video games, and cell phones!</p
A document shredding truck will also be on hand to provide secure recycling of confidential papers.

Curbside Christmas Tree Collection
The Department of Sanitation will collect trees every day from your curbside – separate from your refuse and recycling!
Curbside Christmas tree collection begins Friday, January 6, 2023 through Saturday, January 14, 2023.
Remove all stands, tinsel, lights and ornaments before putting trees out for collection and do NOT wrap trees in plastic bags. (more…)
No Sanitation Collection on Thanksgiving Day
In observance of Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24, 2022, there will be NO trash, curbside composting nor recycling collection on the holiday.
If Thursday is your normal…
- Trash/compost day: set out items at the curb after 4pm Thursday evening for pickup starting Friday. Residents should expect collection delays, as is common after holidays, and the Department appreciates your patience as they work to collect the backlog of material
- Recycling day: set out items after 4pm on Wednesday, November 30 for pickup on Thursday, December 1.

DSNY Autumn Leaf Collection
DSNY will conduct two seasonal leaf collections on Sunday, November 20 and Sunday, December 4, 2022. The leaves collected on these two special collection dates are composted. Please note that leaves set out on other dates will not be composted.
All the bags we had have been claimed. Leaf bags are no longer available.
You can request free leaf bags from Brooklyn Community Board 14 by filling out this form or by calling 718-859-6357. Leaf bags will be available for pick up by appointment at the CB14 District Office starting on Monday, October 26th.
DSNY Special Leaf Collection Fall 2022
The NYC Department of Sanitation will be collecting fall leaves as part of a special leaf collection on Sunday, November 20th and Sunday, December 4, 2022. Residents are asked to set out leaves curbside in paper lawn and leaf bags or unlined bins after 4 PM on the Saturday before collection date, for pickup that evening or the following morning. (more…)
Alternate Side Parking (ASP) Update
Beginning July 5, 2022 alternate side parking regulations for street cleaning will be restored to pre-pandemic frequency as posted on the signage throughout the City. Street sweeping was reduced to one day per week on most residential streets during the Covid-19 pandemic. Two day per week street sweeping will be restored as of 7/5/22. (more…)

No Trash or Recycling Collection on Sat., Feb. 12
In observance of the holiday, there will be no trash, curbside composting or recycling collection on Saturday, February 12, 2022. Residents who normally receive Saturday trash collection may place their material at the curb between 4 p.m. and midnight Sunday evening for collection beginning Monday. Residents who normally receive Saturday recycling collection should place their material out at curbside between 4 p.m. and midnight on Friday, February 18 for pickup on Saturday, February 19.
DSNY Special Leaf Collection
The NYC Department of Sanitation will be collecting fall leaves as part of a special leaf collection on Saturday, December 18, 2021. Residents are asked to set out leaves curbside in paper lawn and leaf bags or unlined bins after 4 PM on Saturday, December 18th for pickup that evening or the following morning. Please note: Leaves, grass, branches, and yard clippings generated by hired professionals cannot be set out for curbside collection. Professionals must dispose of the materials they generate at a permitted composting facility. Alternate Side Parking Resumption
Alternate Side Parking Regulations will resume from Monday, May 18–Sunday, May 24, 2020 for a citywide clean sweep, after which suspensions will continue for another two weeks through Sunday, June 7, 2020 (with the exception of Thursday, May 21, 2020 and Sunday, May 24, 2020 for Solemnity of the Ascension and Eid Al-Fitr. The City may extend the suspension based on street cleanliness and workforce availability. Any New Yorker under isolation who has received a ticket can appeal to the Department of Finance and should provide medical documentation or testimony, which will be taken into consideration when their case is reviewed. Limited Extra Sanitation Collection for Passover
Due to the severity of the COVID-19 situation, community members are asked to start placing additional Passover related materials out for collection after 4pm the evening before their regular collection days ONLY starting Monday, March 23. If residents have large, non-recyclable items (larger than 4 ft. by 3ft.) to dispose of, a bulk collection appointment can be scheduled online at https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/
NYC Plastic Bag Ban Begins March 1, 2020
On March 1, 2020, New York State’s law banning single-use plastic carryout bags takes effect. In New York City, businesses will be required to collect a 5-cent fee on paper carryout bags from customers. The ban and fee are efforts to reduce the use of wasteful single-use bags and their negative impact on the environment. SNAP or WIC users will not be charged any paper bag fees. Residents are encouraged to bring reusable bags to stores. Free reusable bags are available at Brooklyn Community Board 14 while supplies last. Please call CB14 at 718-859-6357 with any questions. DSNY Leaf Collection
Leaf season is here! The Department of Sanitation will be conducting the final special leaf collection for residents of Community Board 14 on Saturday, November 30th. Leaves and yard waste set out curbside in paper leaf bags or unlined bins after 4 PM on Saturday, November 30th for overnight collection. Leaves and yard waste will be composted into mulch.

No Sanitation Collection on President’s Day
In observance of Presidents’ Day, the New York City Department of Sanitation announced that there will not be garbage, organics or recycling collection, nor street cleaning, on Monday, February 18, 2019. Residents who normally receive Monday trash collection should place their materials at curbside after 4 p.m. on Monday, February 18 for collection. Residents who normally receive Monday recycling collection should place their materials at curbside after 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 24 for collection starting Monday, February 25. The Brooklyn Community Board 14 district office will also be closed on Monday, February 18th in observance of President’s Day.
Sanitation Services Suspended on Monday, Jan. 21
The New York City Department of Sanitation announced that in observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, there will be no trash, recycling, or organics collection, nor street cleaning on Monday, January 21, 2019. Residents who normally receive Monday trash or organics collection should place their material out at curbside after 4 p.m. on Monday, January 21. Residents who normally receive Monday recycling collection should place their material out at curbside after 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 27. Sanitation Service Alert for New Year’s Day
The New York City Department of Sanitation will not be collecting trash, organics or recycling on New Year’s Day, Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Residents who normally receive Tuesday garbage / recycling collection should place their materials out at curbside after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1 for collection beginning Wednesday, January 2. E-Waste Collection Service
We are pleased to announce that starting October 1, 2018, residents of Brooklyn Community District 14, as well as other districts in South and Central Brooklyn, can make an appointment online or by calling the Community Board 14 District Office to have their electronic waste picked up by the NYC Department of Sanitation. E-waste items that will be collected include televisions, computers, printers, cell phones, game consoles and more. Some items including air conditioners, appliances, batteries and light bulbs will not be accepted. Fall Leaf Collection
The NYC Department of Sanitation has announced two special leaf collection dates: Saturdays, November 11th & November 25th, 2017.
Instead of letting your leaves rot in a landfill, help DSNY turn them into compost! Residents should put leaves out at the curb after 4 PM on the two special pick-up dates in either in a paper lawn & leaf bag, or in an open, unlined container. The NYC Department of Sanitation will start collecting your leaves the next day. All leaves collected on special leaf pick up dates will be composted. Holiday Sanitation Collection Schedule
The New York City Department of Sanitation has announced that there will be no garbage, recycling nor organics collection on Election Day, Tuesday, November 7, 2017. However, there will be regular garbage, recycling and organics collection, on Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11, as the day falls on a week with two holidays.

Commercial Recycling Enforcement begins 8/1
Beginning August 1, 2017, business recycling rules will be enforced. Since 1992 all businesses in NYC have been required to separate recyclables from garbage. In 2016, DSNY simplified the business recycling rules to increase commercial recycling. These new rules require all businesses in NYC to recycle metal; glass bottles and jars; rigid plastics; beverage cartons; and paper and cardboard. Learn more about commercial recycling.
