Wed. Feb. 1 – Traffic and Parking Advisory

A major event will be held in Whitman Theatre starting at 5 pm. This event will require planning and set up prior to the event and some parking for dignitaries. Therefore, the “C “ Parking lot ( adjacent to Whitman Theatre) will be CLOSED on Wed. Feb. 1^st from 7am to 5pm. Public Safety Personnel will be assigned to the additional parking lots to assist College Parking Permit holders to find parking. In addition, persons parking in the “B” Lot (adjacent to the Nostrand Ave. meat market) are requested to vacate this lot by 5:15pm. Also, at approximately 5:15pm, the East Entrance to the parking lot at Avenue H and Campus Rd./ Nostrand Avenue will be open for two way traffic. Officers will be present to assist and direct traffic.

Winter Jam NYC – Cancelled

Due to the unusually warm weather, the Parks Department has had to cancel Winter Jam 2012. It is too warm to make snow which was the foundation for almost all of the planned activities.

Winter Jam has been an official NYC Parks tradition for the past ten years, and has afforded thousands of New Yorkers the opportunity to try out winter sports for free. We are grateful to our partners and sponsors for their support. We hope that next winter’s weather patterns are frostier!

NYC Parks encourages you to still get outdoors this month by visiting one of the six skating rinks in City parks, or checking out a nature program offered by the Urban Park Rangers.

Did you know that you can drop off your food scraps for composting twice a week?

Compost for Brooklyn‘s Winter Hours

THURSDAYS: 3:00 – 5:00 PM

SUNDAYS: 1:00 – 3:00 PM

The Community Garden is located at Newkirk Avenue and East 8th Street.

Compost for Brooklyn (C4B) is a community composting project based in Kensington, Brooklyn. We are committed to ecological restoration, composting, and education in our local neighborhood and beyond.

Compost for Brooklyn, founded in March 2010, has transformed a vacant lot into a community composting project and thriving refuge for native plants and community members.

Every week, neighbors come to the garden to relax, get their hands dirty, and drop off their veggie scraps, coffee grinds, and other organic waste. In the summer of 2011 alone, the garden received over 8,600 pounds of food scraps from individuals, local schools and businesses–diverting it from garbage trucks and landfills. Finished compost is used to amend depleted soils and cultivate healthy ecosystems.

NYPD Gun Buyback Program

The 70th Precinct is encouraging people from all over Brooklyn to take advantage of a gun buyback program that’s coming up in Brooklyn North.

On Saturday, January 28, the 77th Precinct is hosting the program at the Bedford Central Presbyterian Church, located at 1200 Dean Street at Nostrand. The cash-for-guns program will exchange $200 bank card for operable handguns and $20 bank card for operable rifles and shotguns.

Winter Fire Safety Tips from CB14

Did you know that more than 33% of all home fires occur in December, January & February? To protect yourself and your family this season, make sure that all of your fire safety equipment is up to date and working properly. Read the Winter Safety Bulletin from the New York City Fire Department for more helpful tips on how to keep your home safe and warm throughout the winter season.

Safety Tips
- Carbon Monoxide detectors must be replaced every six years. (The entire unit must be replaced, not just the batteries.) If you live in an apartment, your landlord must provide new detectors every six years.
- Never use an extension cord with an electric space heater and keep space heaters at least 3 feet from bedding, furniture, curtains, etc. Never leave a space heater untended or running while you are out of the house.
- Never use a kitchen oven or gas range to heat your home or apartment. This could lead to the accumulation of carbon monoxide which can cause severe illness or even death.
- Make sure your smoke alarm batteries are in good working order and never disconnect a smoke alarm’s wiring.

Student Internship Opportunity – New York Aquarium

Teens in Conservation: Careers in Aquatic Research& Education (C.A.R.E.) Program

The C.A.R.E. paid internship with the New York Aquarium is open to 9th, 10th or 11th grade students between the ages of 14-17 currently enrolled in a public or private New York City high school who are interested in the field of marine biology. C.A.R.E. interns must commit to participating in this 50-hour program that will take place over the course of 10 days (Saturdays) from February 4, 2012 to April 14, 2012. Below you will find a link for more information and an application. The deadline to apply has been extended to Monday, January 9th.

Christmas Tree Mulchfest 2012

Chip in! Mulch your tree! Help NYC grow!

Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city! The designated tree chipping site within Brooklyn’s Community District 14 is Prospect Park Circle at Parkside Avenue and Prospect Park Southwest. You can bring your tree to any chipping location throughout the five boroughs on January 7 and 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For those with a green thumb, you can even take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard garden or to make a winter bed for a street tree.

The NYC Department of Sanitation will also be conducting special curbside collections for mulching and recycling of Christmas trees from January 3 through January 14. Leave your unwrapped, undecorated tree on the curb and the Department of Sanitation will arrange a pick-up by Saturday, January 14^th.

Join the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and GreeNYC in this citywide green effort! Last year, close to 17,000 Christmas trees were recycled. Please help us top this number!

United Cerebral Palsy of New York is offering extended registration for their free Universal Pre-K program through January 31, 2012. The UCP center is located at 160 Lawrence Avenue in Brooklyn and offers a free, high-quality, family friendly learning environment for all children. The UCP program has been in operation locally for over 60 years. All classes are taught by NYS certified teachers and assistants and the center features many additional amenities such as technology enhanced classrooms, an indoor pool and indoor and outdoor play spaces.

Community Board 14 is proud to announce that we will be hosting the Fifth Annual Youth Conference in April 2012. Please check our website for updated information regarding the date, location and registration requirements. All students between ages 12-19 are welcome to attend.

We will be hosting a public organizing meeting on January 23, 2012 and all are welcome to attend. Community organizations and students groups interested in being involved in the 2012 Youth Conference should contact Anya Hoyer at Brooklyn Community Board 14 at 718-859-6357. We are looking forward to seeing you all there!

Brooklyn’s Community Board 14 (Flatbush/Midwood) held the Fourth Annual Youth Conference, themed “Get in the Game: Skills to Make You a Player in the Read World” on Thursday, April 28, 2011 from 4-7 PM at the Brooklyn College Student Center, 6th Floor, East 27th Street and Campus Road, Brooklyn.

The conference is targeted towards teens between the ages of 12 to 19. Admission to the conference is free. Free food and other refreshments will be provided.

Q Train Service Announcements – Jan-March 2012

There will be no Q train service between Prospect Park and 57th Street during the weekends of Jan. 7-9, Jan. 14-16, Jan. 21-23, Jan. 28-30, Feb. 11-13, Feb. 18-20 and Feb. 25-27. Shuttle buses will replace all Q subway service between Prospect Park and Atlantic/Pacific Street. For travel between Atlantic/Pacific and 57th Street, riders are instructed to take the N train which operates on the same line. According to the MTA, the weekend diversions are for track work and replacement.

Southbound Q trains operate express between Kings Highway and Brighton Beach during the weekend of March 17-19.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors – Clear snow for the elderly this winter

NYC seeks volunteers to clear snow for our elderly residents this winter.

This winter season, NYC Service is hoping to enlist community organizations in an effort to help homebound seniors and the disabled clear the snow in front of their homes. Please join us in our continued effort to make our City safer for all people while promoting our “neighbors helping neighbors” policy. NYC Service has already worked with the Department for the Aging to identify seniors that would need this last resort service. NYC Service is currently building a list of community groups and organizations in order to deploy volunteers to meet the needs of seniors in their neighborhood.
