Friends of Newkirk Plaza & Flatbush Development Corp. seeks community members to fill the empty giant tree planters and hanging flower boxes on the newly renovated Newkirk Plaza. Put on your overalls, bring your shovels and join in on a day of greening Newkirk Plaza. Volunteers will be planting trees and filling hanging flower and plant boxes under the direction of expert gardener Susannah Laskaris.

Volunteers are asked to bring shovels, wheelbarrows, cultivators, spades, pocketknives, watering cans and gloves if available. Please RSVP to spankytomato68@gmail.com. Include the time you are available and what tools you will be bringing in the email.

The Community Garden is located at Newkirk Avenue and East 8th Street.

Compost for Brooklyn (C4B) is a community composting project based in Kensington, Brooklyn. We are committed to ecological restoration, composting, and education in our local neighborhood and beyond.

Compost for Brooklyn, founded in March 2010, has transformed a vacant lot into a community composting project and thriving refuge for native plants and community members.

Every week, neighbors come to the garden to relax, get their hands dirty, and drop off their veggie scraps, coffee grinds, and other organic waste. In the summer of 2011 alone, the garden received over 8,600 pounds of food scraps from individuals, local schools and businesses–diverting it from garbage trucks and landfills. Finished compost is used to amend depleted soils and cultivate healthy ecosystems.

The Flatbush-Nostrand Junction Business Improvement District (BID) is conducting a survey to learn about how local residents and shoppers feel about the Junction shopping area.  By gathering local input about the area’s strengths and weaknesses, the BID hopes to discover ways to strengthen the business district and make the Junction a successful shopping destination and vibrant commercial district. For areas with regular pick up on Monday/Thursday or Wednesday/Saturday the plan provides for an additional collection on Friday, April 6^th. For areas with regular pick up on Tuesday/Friday the plan provides for enhanced collection on Friday, April 6^th. (Click on the map to see a larger image).

The additional/enhanced Friday recycling collection will take place from 12:00 midnight to 8:00 AM. Therefore all recycling materials must be placed at curbside on the evening of Thursday, April 5^th for collection on Friday, April 6^th.  The use of plastic bags for these special collections is strongly suggested.

All regular refuse materials, including Chometz, should be placed at curbside no later than 11:00 AM on Friday, April 6^th.

Department of Sanitation policy requires a special appointment for removal of discarded refrigerators and/or air conditioners. Arrangements can be made by calling 311 or by visiting their web site, www.nyc.gov/sanitation prior to the week of March 26^th to ensure pick-up before the holiday. It is important to prepare early and utilize the regular sanitation services the week before for bulk items in order to avoid an excessive volume of debris that could impede planned schedules.

All mattresses placed out for collection must be sealed in plastic. Failure to do so will result in a summons.

Special thanks to the Department of Sanitation Brooklyn South Borough Superintendent Myron Priester, Deputy Chief Daniel Stine, District Superintendent Kevin Tock, as well as our local elected officials for their assistance in developing the plan.

Greening Flatbush 2012: Garden Where You Are!

Greening Flatbush is back, Sunday March 25th. Get involved!

Sustainable Flatbush will host our 4th annual Greening Flatbush: Garden Where You Are, on Sunday, March 25th at 2pm.  The event will be held at the historic Flatbush Reformed Church, host of our compost and gardening initiatives, located on Flatbush and Church Avenues.

This year, Greening Flatbush promises to be better than ever — an event the entire family can participate in and enjoy. Our annual extravaganza celebrating community gardening, neighborhood greening, and urban agriculture will feature, from 2 – 5pm, hands-on workshops, interactive demos, DIY projects, creative arts, and live entertainment, presented by Sustainable Flatbush and a curated roster of community-based groups. The day will culminate in a delicious Community Meal from 5 until 7pm.

What’s New at Greening Flatbush 2012

In addition to interactive displays from a wide variety of community organizations (check out info and photos from last year’s event!), Sustainable Flatbush will offer workshops on Gardening with Native Plants, Composting, Community Engagement, and Solar for Community Gardens.

There will be live entertainment and a delicious meal prepared for the whole community. Like our first Community Meal on January 28, which attracted over 120 people, this is an opportunity for neighbors to meet neighbors and to share, learn, and build relationships around sustainable living in our communities.

Why We Do It

Greening Flatbush: Garden Where You Are engages and empowers people from all over Brooklyn and beyond to participate in creating sustainable urban neighborhoods. Our goal is for YOU to discover (or create!) a project within walking distance of your home where you can get involved in making your community greener — whether it’s by learning to compost, joining a CSA or community garden, adopting a tree, or growing flowers on your windowsill!

While bringing more visibility and participants to sustainable neighborhood-based projects, Greening Flatbush will also be a great opportunity for all of us to get acquainted with like-minded organizations and people, form partnerships, and strengthen the growing network of environmental stewardship in Brooklyn.
