Dear Community Leader:

Brooklyn Community Board 14 is pleased to announce it has begun planning for its third annual Youth Conference for 2010.

As you may recall, CB14 hosted its first two Youth Conferences in 2008 and 2009 at Brooklyn College. We considered them enormous successes. Hundreds of teenagers attended to find out about jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities, as well as what services various government agencies, non-profit organizations and local businesses are offering young people in our community.

This year, the goal of the Youth Conference will be to provide youth of all ages with an opportunity to better acquaint themselves with public servants, such as New York City Police Officers, and to find educational, job, and community service opportunities for the summer and beyond.

We want comprehensive input in the planning and execution of this conference from the community, City agencies, and from young people who can communicate to us how we can better meet their needs and assist them in their goals.

The Board’s Youth Services Committee will be holding its next planning meeting on Thursday April 22, at Brooklyn College. We encourage your participation on that evening along with anyone else who might be interested to ensure another successful event in 2010.

We look forward to your continued participation in this important event for the youth of our community. Please confirm your attendance by calling the CB14 District office at (718) 859-6357.

Sincerely,

Neil Brier
Co-Chair, CB14 Youth Services Committee

Beverley Kilpatrick

Community Board 14 has concluded its Holiday Food Drive, collecting almost 200 pounds of food from community residents to be distributed among food pantries within Flatbush and Midwood.

Food pantry shelves have been particularly bare in Community District 14 lately as the economy has worsened and more people are looking to make ends meet.

“When Community Board 14 heard about this on-going crisis affecting our local food pantries, we knew we had to act immediately to organize this relief effort,” said Alvin Berk, Chair of Community Board 14.

“We are really quite blessed to see the outpouring of support from Board members as well as the residents of Flatbush and Midwood to help their neighbors who are hurting a little more than everyone else these days,” said Doris Ortíz, District Manager.

Asked about whether the Board will work on this issue beyond the holiday season, Mr. Berk replied, “Our Human Services and Youth Services Committees are exploring the possibilities of a long-term effort as the high demand at food pantries continues.”
