Spring is the traditional time of the year for planting, weeding and sprucing up our city. It is also the time when Keep America Beautiful (KAB) holds its April event in Times Square to kickoff the Great American Cleanup™, which runs March 1st through May 31st. Keep New York City Beautiful—a KAB affiliate—will join in to ensure that as nature reawakens and redecorates our streets and parks with green leaves and new buds, the city will be sparkling clean to celebrate the new season.

It is important to keep in mind that in spite of the tireless efforts of the dedicated men and women of Sanitation, keeping a city the size of New York clean requires everybody’s help, cooperation and …participation!

Here’s how you can help keep our streets and sidewalks clean, and avoid fines:

Don’t litter.

Always pick up after your dog.

Use street litter-baskets only for pedestrian litter, not for household or commercial refuse.

Organize and join community cleanup and beautification efforts.

Report graffiti. It’s an eyesore that ruins the look of any community. To find out how, call 311.

Remove illegally posted fliers, handbills, etc. They create an unsightly mess.

Keep tree pits free from trash…better yet, plant flowers in them. The Parks Department will help you.

Always sweep the sidewalk and the 18 inch-gutter area, extending from the curb into the street.

Place refuse and recyclables out for collection at the curb, no sooner than the evening before your regular collection day.

Make sure that refuse is placed in sealed bags or in properly covered containers to avoid windborne litter.

Springtime is a good time to clean up our communities. We encourage New Yorkers to organize and participate in cleanup and beautification projects. The Department of Sanitation can help. Our Tool Loan Program provides cleaning tools, absolutely free of charge, to volunteers from community groups, civic, block and merchants associations, etc. Brooms, shovels and rakes are available at our tool depots. These tools are available in short-term loans. The Department donates gloves and bags.

Go to the Department’s website, at www.nyc.gov/sanitation, and click on “Keep NYC Beautiful,” then click again on “New York City Department of Sanitation – Cleanup Tool Loan Program.” Our website provides an overview of the program, as well as contact information to help you determine the number and kind of tools needed for your particular event and how to reserve them.

Remember: Reserve your tools early so that the Department can accommodate the needs of your group.

You’ll now celebrate the new season with the pride that comes from contributing to your own community. I think that after such a cold, harsh winter, we’re all more than ready to enjoy the warm, sunny days of spring.

Good luck with your cleanup, and thank you for helping us keep New York City clean, green and beautiful!

Weather Permitting, Pesticide Application by Trucks is Scheduled for Thursday, September 2, 2010 between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM the Following Morning in Parts of: Midwood

A map of areas to be treated is available at http://nyc.gov/health/wnv (click “Spray Schedule”).

Due to rising West Nile virus and adult mosquito activities in Brooklyn including parts of Midwood, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) will spray pesticide from trucks from 8:00 PM on Thursday, September 2, 2010 to 6:00 AM on Friday, September 3, 2010. If weather does not permit, or equipment malfunctions occur, spraying will be delayed until Tuesday, September 7, 2010.

The NYC DOHMH advises persons to stay indoors during the ground spraying of pesticides. For additional information regarding Anvil and other mosquito control products, please see our website at: http://nyc.gov/health/wnv.

Please note that the application may be delayed as a result of unfavorable weather conditions
(i.e., rain, high winds) or equipment malfunction. For more up-to-date information on the spraying activities, you may call City Information at 3-1-1 or visit online spray schedule at http://nyc.gov/html/doh/html/wnv/wnvspray.shtml.
THURSDAY, May 6, 2010
Community Board 14 District Office
810 EAST 16TH STREET
(between Avenue H and the Railroad Dead End)
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

** Please note that each public hearing will commence immediately following the previously scheduled hearing **

SPECIAL PERMITS:
Applications for Special Permits have been filed with the Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA), pursuant to Zoning Resolution of the City of New York §73-622, to enlarge single or two-family detached or semi-detached residences within the designated R3-2 district bounded by Avenue I, Nostrand Avenue, Kings Highway, Avenue O and Ocean Avenue in Community Board 14 in the Borough of Brooklyn.

7:00 PM – 1225 East 28th Street, between Avenue L and Avenue M, Block 7646, Lot 34, BSA# 36-10-BZ – Applicant’s Representative: Eric Palatnick, 212-425-4343

7:15 PM – 1230 East 27th Street, between Avenue L and Avenue M, Block 7644, Lot 58, BSA# 37-10-BZ –
Applicant’s Representative: Eric Palatnick, 212-425-4343

VARIANCE:
A Variance application has been filed with the Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) pursuant to §72-21 of the Zoning Resolution of the City of New York to permit a Use Group 6 commercial use in the entire building at the premises. Sixty-two percent (62%) of the premises lies within an R5B zoning district where UG6 uses are not permitted as-of-right; the remaining thirty-eight (38%) percent of the premises lies within a C4-4A zoning district. Since less than half of the parcel is situated within the desired zoning district (i.e. C4-4A), a variance to permit a Use Group 6 uses in the entire building is being sought.

7:30 PM – 150 Kenilworth Place, between Hillel Place and Glenwood Road, Block 7556, Lot 71,
BSA# 40-10-BZ – Applicant’s Representative: Richard S. Lobel, 212-725-2727

If you would like to testify at any of these public hearings, you should pre-register for speaking time by calling the Board office at 718-859-6357. You may, in addition, register to speak at the hearing on May 6th.

People of all ages, races, ethnic groups, citizens and non-citizens alike, regardless of legal status, are to be counted in the next census in 2010. The United States Department of Commerce’s Census Bureau is responsible for the count.

The 2010 Census will find out how many people live in New York City, how many elected representatives we will have in Congress, determine who will represent you in the City Council and in the New York State Legislature, determine how much funding we will receive from the federal government for education, healthcare, job training, transportation, senior services, and other critical services important to all New Yorkers.

The 2010 Census is a form (in PDF) with 10 simple questions that will be mailed to you between February and March of 2010. You will be asked to answer questions about yourself and each person who lives with you. You then must mail back the completed form by April 1, 2010.
