“We are very glad that CB14, DOT and the Church Avenue BID were able to work together on improving the flow of traffic and the availability of parking on one of the most heavily trafficked commercial strips in our district,” said Alvin M. Berk, Chairman.

Last year, the Board’s Transportation Committee, headed by co-chairs Morris Sacks and Joseph Basso, introduced a resolution, which was subsequently adopted by the Board, recommending to DOT that the time regulations for metered parking be reduced to encourage a greater turnover of parking spaces, reduce double parking, and therefore improve overall traffic conditions on Church Avenue.

DOT’s alternative proposal, the Park Smart Program, would have established higher parking meters rates that would increase during “peak” hours when DOT determined there was higher demand for parking.

“In these difficult economic times, we want to ensure that our local commercial strips are as welcoming to potential customers as possible.  This means more available and affordable parking so people continue to Shop Brooklyn!” added Doris Ortíz, District Manager.

Granite Construction has informed CB14 about the following street closure and work in conjunction with the Brighton Line Rehabilitation Project:

Please be advised that Elm Avenue between East 15 Street and Avenue M will be closed to vehicular traffic for crane operation at Elm Avenue between the hours of 7:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Saturdays, and  9:00 am to 6:00 pm Sundays from July 6th to October 6th.

• Pedestrian walkways will not be closed at any time.
• There will be no impact to subway operation or service.
• The estimated date of completion is July 17, 2010

The closure will occur from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the following Saturdays:

• Saturday, June 19 Cancelled due to street event
• Saturday, June 26
• Saturday, July 10
• Saturday, July 17

Please be advised that Avenue L between East 15th Street and East 17th Street will be closed to vehicular traffic for crane operation at Avenue L nightly between the hours of 8:00 pm to 6:00 am from June 14th to June 25th.

Customers who need to exit at Avenue H and Avenue M should take the train to Kings Highway and transfer to a Manhattan-bound train.

• Coney Island-bound riders entering at Avenue H and Avenue M should take Manhattan-bound B and Q trains to Newkirk Avenue for Coney Island-bound trains.

•  Brighton Beach-bound  and Coney Island-bound Q trains continue to bypass Avenue U and Neck Rd.

And as a reminder, Brighton Beach-bound and Manhattan-bound B trains will be running on the local tracks until Fall 2011.

The origins of St. Brendan Church dates back over 100 years ago (St. Brendan, in, 2007, celebrated their 100th anniversary.) The parish had a grammar school, founded in 1913, and a diocesan high school, started in 1921. Although both schools are now closed, they have been replaced by St. Brendan’s Houses, a residence for senior citizens. The old high school is now a William O’Connor School, one of seven schools that serve children three-to-five years old with developmental disabilities. There’s also a universal pre-school program for the children living in the community.

There were summer Sunday night dances organized by Father Henry J. Palmer in the late 1940s in the parish courtyard. He played the great golden oldies music of the ’40s and he also called square dancing. Through the years, beginning in 1907, the church has had rune pastors, starting with Msgr. Timothy Hickey, the founding pastor, 1907-43, to the present pastor, Father Frank Spacek, who has been with the church since 2005. St. Brendan hosts many events throughout the year, from flower sales (usually around the holidays), a book fair, clothing drives, a 50-50 raffle every month to Christmas fairs, and an annual flea market, to mention a few.
